JOIN THE DEBATE OVER THE COVER PHOTOGRAPH
It's a rare thing when Kathleen and I are this far apart on anything... but she hates the cover photo on this book. Hates it. Because I look grumpy and grouchy. I love it because it
makes me laugh. That’s precisely how I look from the beginning of
any production until the final wrap. Nothing ever seems to go right. And I always feel
that I’m one of the few on the set who really cares about what we’re
supposed to be trying to accomplish. I’m not, of course, but
knowing that doesn’t seem to abate the feeling. Being both the
producer and director has always been a lonely gig for me, and the
photo seems to speak to that as well. Okay, perhaps this is all too
esoteric for a book cover, but I suppose at some level, even though I chose the photo, it's bothersome that there's such a possibility for polarization. Neither Kathleen nor I can remember
what I might’ve been observing at the moment but we do agree that
something wasn’t measuring up to what I had seen while writing
the screenplay. A safe bet. It almost never does. And I suppose that’s the
point of the photograph. It speaks the truth. -- Joe

Roy Williams writes: Just received Kathleen’s e-mail with a photo of the cover of the new book…coming from someone who has known and loved Joe (in a masculine sense) longer than anyone else who will comment on this matter, and having lived through those days hearing from him on that situation, the cover is perfect, and accurately portrays his attitude about the whole matter….if you know Joe well, you can read his thoughts by looking at his face….been there, done that! |

Good friend Mary Schneider writes: Very exciting - the new book. But couldn't you have smiled a teeny bit for the new cover? You gotta flash that grin! You have a hard act to follow after that gorgeous horse on your last cover. |

Another good friend, Melanie Bowles disagrees: I love the cover. I love your determined stance, I love the look on your face. Why? Because if someone (or an entire industry) tells you "no you can't"... then you are clearly someone who pulls themselves up by their bootstraps and says "Watch this!" I love the focus in your eyes. I love the message it sends. And within all the toughness and determination, I can still see... in your eyes... that you're a genuine softy who would move heaven and earth for the people and the animals that you love... Me like. |

Tick Davis writes: When I first saw the cover, I wondered why he picked that photo of himself. He does look grumpy! However, when I considered the title of the book, it made perfect sense - if I had been in his position, I'd have been grumpier! It does show someone "dug in" and ready to fight, determined to do what he set out to do. I like it! Besides, more and more over the years, Hollywood has made me grumpy with what they're putting out on the screens of America. ;- ) (owner of Joe's previously-owned James Jones dulcimer)
